Does the UK have private insurance companies?
The NHS covers healthcare for the majority of the population, and is completely tax-funded, but there are still many popular private health insurance companies that cover UK residents, including but not limited to: BUPA: The single largest British health insurance company in UK.
Most UK residents are entitled to free healthcare from the NHS. But many people also take out private medical insurance, which covers the costs of being treated by private healthcare providers.
The cumulative impact of these changes on elective care is that between 2019/20 and 2021/22, there was an increase in proportion of privately provided care from 11% to 13%, and a decrease in proportion of NHS-provided care from 89% to 87%.
This is entirely up to you. You already have access to free treatment from the NHS, so choosing private health insurance is more of a personal preference. If you're happy to rely on the NHS for treatment or if you have a long-standing chronic condition, then health insurance may not be for you.
Aviva. With 33 million customers globally, Aviva is the biggest insurance company in the UK. Aviva's Healthier Solutions is a product that offers private medical treatment through an extensive nationwide network.
You usually pay a monthly amount for your health insurance, which is called the premium. Your insurer can then pay if you need treatment that it covers while the policy is active. It is designed to offer treatment alongside the service provided by the NHS.
Age | Monthly Premium (£)* |
---|---|
20-years-old | £38.36 |
30-years-old | £51.57 |
40-years-old | £64.25 |
50-years-old | £83.50 |
Reality Check verdict: If you look at every penny spent on health by anyone in the country, then the UK spends about half as much on health as the US does. But if you compare the amount spent on the NHS with the amount spent by the US government on public healthcare, the difference is much smaller.
Though the public system dominates healthcare provision in England, private health care and a wide variety of alternative and complementary treatments are available for those willing and able to pay.
According to Statista's Consumer Insights, 22% of UK adults now have private healthcare, which has nearly doubled since 2019. Other research by YouGov has shown that one in eight British people have used private healthcare within the last year for themselves or a member of their immediate family.
Is UK healthcare good or bad?
The UK performs well on protecting people from some of the financial costs of ill health, but lags behind its peers on important health care outcomes, including life expectancy and deaths. The latter could have been avoided through timely and effective health care, and public health and preventive services.
The average cost of Bupa health insurance is between £39.60 – £75.31 per month based on the type of cover you buy (individual, couples or family cover) and your age when you apply.
Most NHS patients don't have a choice when it comes to selecting a GP or treatment hospital; this is often based on the location of your home. With private medical insurance, you'll have more choice – you'll be able to choose where you're treated and will have more control over who you are treated by.

Why is healthcare cheaper in the UK?
However, the UK has a publicly funded healthcare system known as the National Health Service (NHS), which provides healthcare services to residents at no upfront cost at the point of care.
Hospital treatment is free of charge for people who are ordinarily resident in the UK. This does not depend on nationality, payment of UK taxes, National Insurance contributions, being registered with a GP, having an NHS number, or owning property in the UK.
There are many possible reasons for that increase in healthcare prices: The introduction of new, innovative healthcare technology can lead to better, more expensive procedures and products. The complexity of the U.S. healthcare system can lead to administrative waste in the insurance and provider payment systems.
The Commonwealth Fund conducts an analysis of the healthcare systems of 11 developed countries every few years. According to their latest report published in 2021 analyzing data primarily up to 2019, the US had an overall ranking of 11 out of 11 and the UK ranked 4 out of 11.
Even with its numerous strengths, the British healthcare system confronts a variety of challenges. These include funding challenges, extended wait times for treatment, and workforce shortages.
